Optimal Designs for Free Knot Least Squares Splines

چکیده
In this paper D-optimal designs for free knot least squares spline estimation are investigated. In contrast to most of the literature on optimal design for spline regression models it is assumed that the knots of the spline are also estimated from the data, which yields to optimal design problems for nonlinear models. In some cases local D-optimal designs can be found explicitly. Moreover, it is shown that the points of minimally supported D-optimal designs are increasing and real analytic functions of the knots; these results are used for the numerical construction of local D-optimal designs by means of Taylor expansions. In order to obtain optimal designs which are less sensitive to a specification of the unknown knots, a maximin approach is proposed and standardized maximin D-optimal designs for least square splines with estimated knots are determined in the class of all minimally supported designs.

Free-Knot Polynomial Splines with Confidence Intervals
We construct approximate confidence intervals for a nonparametric regression function, using polynomial splines with free-knot locations. The number of knots is determined by generalized cross-validation. The estimates of knot locations and coefficients are obtained through a non-linear least squares solution that corresponds to the maximum likelihood estimate. Confidence intervals are then con...
متن کاملKnot Selection for Least Squares Thin Plate Splines
An algorithm for selection of knot point locations for approximation of functions from large sets of scattered data by least squares Thin Plate Splines is given. The algorithm is based on the idea that each data point is equally important in defining the surface, which allows the knot selection process to be decoupled from the least squares. Properties of the algorithm are investigated, and exa...
متن کاملLeast squares splines with free knots: global optimization approach
Splines with free knots have been extensively studied in regard to calculating the optimal knot positions. The dependence of the accuracy of approximation on the knot distribution is highly nonlinear, and optimisation techniques face a difficult problem of multiple local minima. The domain of the problem is a simplex, which adds to the complexity. We have applied a recently developed cutting an...
متن کاملAn Algorithm of Data Reduction Free Knot Spline Modelling
A new algorithm is developed for modelling a large densely distributed data set to within a given tolerance using free knot splines. The goal is to use as few knots as possible. Our approach to this problem is to group the data by using ideas from non-linear approximation, especially the idea of balancing subintervals. We then use the least squares method to generate the desired curve. Pre-proc...
متن کاملOptimal Design For Additive Partially Nonlinear Models
We develop optimal design theory for additive partially nonlinear regression models, and show that D-optimal designs can be found as the products of the corresponding D-optimal designs in one dimension. For partially nonlinear models, D-optimal designs depend on the unknown nonlinear model parameters, and misspeci_cations of these parameters can lead to poor designs. Hence we generalise our res...
